Ainthinai Kaapoam

The Thamizhs of the Sangam Age classified the geographical landscape as ‘Ainthinai’: Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal, Paalai Their lifestyles were built around and in consonance with the nature of these landscapes. These five landscapes are named after flowers that bloom specifically in those terrains. This bears testimony to their ecofriendly lifestyle wherein they lived in harmony with nature.

The connection between their lifestyle and the corresponding landscapes run deep.

Warriors protecting their land adorn their tresses with specific flowers that symbolize the motive, tactics and the strategy of the war. In this way, they effectively communicate with their adversaries.

To calculate the time, our ancestors ,brdivided it into two units., large and small.

The hour of the day when the flowers blossom in a particular landscape is regarded as the small unit of that particular landscape.

It amazes us to discover that these are named out of whim. These are named after diligent observation and study. Mullai flower blooms in the evening, Neidhal flower blooms during sunset, Lotus blooms in early morning, Kurinji flower blooms in midnight and Paalai flower blooms at noon.

Thus, our ancestors lived in holistic harmony with nature.
